Designing your new kitchen work surface can be daunting. We collected the following advice from interior designers and our recent Gemini renovators to help with planning your perfect bespoke countertops.

1. Think about your daily interactions around the kitchen, which areas do you spend most time in and what do you enjoy doing?

2. Is a kitchen island area going to be a focal point for you? Is it for entertaining or preparing food? Would you like a waterfall effect, with the worktop extending down to the floor on each side? Would you like the underside to be smoothed off for a bar seating area?

3. What about corners and edges? If you have young children, best to round everything off. If you have high-level handles, consider a shark’s nose or double bevel edging.

4. Think about the walls. If there are tiles there just now, are you keeping those in place? Will they meet the new work surface or will you need a small upstand? How about replacing the tiles altogether and adding a full height splashback the same as your worktop for that overall sleek effect.

5. Now sinks and dishwashing - that’s another big question before you customise your countertops. How do you like to do the dishes now? Which way for drying? Drainage grooves or not?
