Our Story
One hundred years. Four generations. One quiet obsession with doing things properly.
There is a particular kind of confidence that comes not from ambition, but from time. From knowing a craft so deeply — its weight, its grain, its temperament — that no trend, no shortcut, no imitation can touch what you have made. Gemini Worktops is that kind of business. It began with a single stonemason in South Yorkshire in 1927, and it has arrived to date with a second production line, a new century, and the same unshakeable instinct: that the home deserves the very finest.
1927
Henry Rotherham. A stonemason. South Yorkshire. The tools were simple; the standards were not.
Henry did not build a brand. He built things that lasted. Garden walls. Doorsteps. Church restorations. The kind of work where you measure twice, cut once, and walk away quietly — knowing it will still be standing long after you are gone. Reputation wasn’t something you chased; it was something that followed you home.
That patience. That refusal to rush. That particular pride in stone. It is, nearly a hundred years later, still entirely recognisable in everything Gemini Worktops does.
Joseph Rotherham learns the trade as his father’s apprentice — then establishes his own stonemason’s yard in Market Weighton. The craft passes quietly to the next pair of hands.
1973
Joe Rotherham Jnr joins the family. High-end residential and commercial stonework. A growing reputation for exactness.
The work grew more ambitious — larger commissions, finer detail, clients who expected the very best and knew it when they saw it. None of it changed the fundamentals. Measure twice. Cut once. Answer to the stone.
A reputation for exactness is not built quickly. It is built one job at a time, until people simply stop asking anyone else.
The business is formally incorporated as J Rotherham — a structured vehicle for bespoke masonry, fireplace, and stone carving from its East Yorkshire base.
1988
The first CNC stone fabrication machine in the UK — introduced by J Rotherham. A century-old trade met a technology it had never known before.
It was a bold thing to do. The industry ran on hand tools and hard-won instinct, and here was a machine promising to cut stone to a tolerance the human hand could only aspire to. But precision had always been the point. The machine simply made it repeatable.
The craft did not change. It sharpened.
The fourth generation arrives. Matt Rotherham joins, laser templating launches nationwide, and the Middlesbrough facility begins producing over 20,000 kitchen worktops a year.
2015
Joe Rotherham Jnr handed the daily running of the business to his son, Matt, who became Managing Director. There was no fanfare. No rebrand. No announcement in a trade journal.
Just a family, passing something precious from one generation to the next, as they always had.
Matt arrived with an eye for what was possible — not at the expense of what already worked, but in addition to it. He understood the craft. He also understood the future. The combination would prove decisive.
2017
Not many businesses can say they installed the world’s first fully robotic stone-cutting production line. This one can.
Supported by major infrastructure investment, the Middlesbrough facility made a leap that most in the industry were still only reading about. It was not done for spectacle. It was done because precision matters, consistency matters, and because a family that had been making things properly for ninety years was not about to stop.
The machines changed. The standards did not.
2020
In the middle of a year the world would rather forget, Gemini Worktops was quietly launched. A direct-to-consumer brand. Four generations of fabrication and masonry expertise, offered — for the first time — directly to the homeowner.
No middlemen. No kitchen retailer taking the margin and the margin of trust with it. Just Gemini Worktops: from raw slab to installed worktop, under one roof, with one guarantee.
That same year, as the wider industry restructured and contracted, the operation consolidated its advanced manufacturing facility and head office into a single resilient model. While others stepped back, Gemini Worktops stepped forward.
Gemini Worktops vertically integrates with F Jones Cleveland Ltd, creating the largest independent manufacturer-retailer of stone worktops in the UK.
The craft turns digital. AI design tools let customers see their stone at home before a single slab is cut.
2026
A multi-million-pound investment. A second production line. New precision cutting, polishing, finishing.
In 1927, Henry Rotherham shaped stone with his hands. In 2026, that same stone — still sourced with care, still cut to exacting standards — moves through a facility he could not have imagined. But he would have recognised the feeling. The quiet insistence on doing it properly. The belief that the home is worth it.
Some things don’t change. They just get better.
