The project began with a simple, yet daring, gesture: removing the dividing wall between the kitchen and dining room. This single move opened the space, flooding it with natural light and creating a blank canvas ready for reinvention. A structural RSJ was installed to support the load of the house above, ensuring the open-plan design was both safe and seamless. The old dining room window gave way to sleek patio doors, framing an uninterrupted view of the lush, extensive garden beyond and allowing the outdoors to become an integral part of the home’s interior.

The Robinsons had a clear vision for the renovation: the kitchen needed to be a social hub, an elegant yet practical space that could accommodate everything from casual family breakfasts to celebratory dinners with friends. Central to this vision was a large, multifunctional island - an expansive gathering point for conversation, cooking, and crafting. Its size and design ensured that the family could interact without disrupting food preparation, turning the kitchen into a true communal heart.

To achieve the luxurious yet practical aesthetic they desired, the family selected the Calacatta Goldlight quartz from the Minerox collection for the kitchen worktops. With its sweeping golden veins and polished, tactile finish, the quartz provided both visual drama and long-lasting durability. It became the focal point of the kitchen, particularly in the design of the island, which features a striking waterfall edge. Here, the quartz flows seamlessly from the countertop to the floor, creating a monolithic sculpture that commands attention while remaining functional for everyday life.

Details That Make a Difference

The renovation didn’t stop at aesthetics; careful consideration was given to practicality. The induction oven was housed in an alcove which had been cleverly converted into what used to be part of the under the stairs, integrating seamlessly into the overall design. 

The sides and full-height splashback were clad in Calacatta Goldlight quartz, turning a utilitarian feature into a show-stopping element. Even the deep window cill above the sink was transformed into a durable, elegant surface perfect for plants, herbs, or decorative accents, taking full advantage of the natural light streaming in from the side garden. Drainer grooves were subtly carved directly into the quartz beside the belfast sink, while upstands ran along the walls for a flawless, easy-to-clean finish.

Storage was another key priority. Clever cabinetry solutions were incorporated throughout the space, ensuring that every utensil, pan, and plate had its place. The result is a kitchen that feels uncluttered and calm, despite being designed for the vibrant life of a growing family. Clever wall units, subtle lighting, and understated hardware complement the dramatic quartz surfaces, creating a balanced aesthetic that is both contemporary and timeless.

Quartz, Wood, and Copper: A Perfect Balance

This kitchen is a masterclass in balance, where the sweeping veins of the Calacatta Goldlight design effortlessly tie together contrasting elements. The warm, natural tones of the wooden island cabinetry, accented with gleaming copper handles, are grounded and elevated by the quartz’s luxurious pattern, while the soft, matte mushroom-coloured floor units provide a calm, understated backdrop. 

The quartz acts as a visual bridge, linking the island’s rich textures with the muted elegance of the painted cabinets, creating a cohesive, harmonious look that feels both inviting and sophisticated. Every surface works in together, drawing the eye around the space while ensuring that function and beauty coexist seamlessly.
