The Art of the Slow Reveal: How Ellie & Lawrence Restored Soul to a 1890 Victorian Home

Designing Around a Victorian Footprint 

Originally, the kitchen was tucked away, while a separate dining room occupied the prime downstairs footprint. The decision to open up the downstairs and relocate the kitchen to the old dining room was immediate, but it brought with it a classic Victorian conundrum: a beautifully stubborn, yet incredibly restrictive, brick chimney breast that dominated an entire wall of the narrow room.

"We spent a long time trying to make the layout work," Ellie reflects. "We wanted to maximise our kitchen worktops space, but the chimney breast left us with very few options. In the end, we made the brave decision to remove the chimney breast throughout the entire height of the house. It was a major hit to the renovation budget, but it completely transformed the space." 

By releasing the room from the constraints of the heavy brickwork, the layout breathed. The newly opened space allowed for the inclusion of a generous breakfast bar with seating - which has quickly become the couple’s favourite spot for morning coffees and quiet evening conversations. 

Sourcing the Perfect Quartz Worktops

While the cabinetry was sourced from a high-street retailer, Ellie found that the standard worktop offerings lacked the character and soul required to do justice to an 1890 property. She was looking for something that carried the soft, historic elegance of natural marble but possessed the effortless, enduring practicality needed for modern life.

To stay within budget while securing her dream stone, Ellie made a conscious, edit-first design choice: she opted for slightly fewer kitchen units, prioritising the quality of the raw materials over an abundance of cupboards. It is a philosophy that echoes the classic high-end interior ethos - investing in beautiful, tactile surfaces that you touch and appreciate every single day. The savings even allowed them to carry the same quartz through into the adjoining utility room, establishing a calm, unbroken visual thread.

"The moment the kitchen worktops were delivered and installed felt like the true turning point," says Ellie. "After months of dust, structural work, and DIY, the stone instantly made the kitchen feel bespoke, cohesive, and deeply luxurious."

The Finished Sanctuary

Six months after the first floorboard was lifted, the kitchen stands as a testament to the beauty of doing things properly. It is a space that feels entirely organic to the history of the house yet perfectly aligned with modern living.

Looking back, Ellie smiles at the journey. Her only regret? "Not including a floating shelf in the same quartz material to tie the whole design together even more."

It is a tiny detail in a project that got all the big decisions absolutely right. Ellie and Lawrence have proved that with patience, a bit of grit, and an eye for beautiful materials, you can turn a forgotten Victorian house into a forever sanctuary.
